When it comes to providing mental healthcare for patients, our evaluations are all-encompassing, our interventions are evidence-based and our approach is compassionate.

The Psychiatry Program Team

To bring healing to patients, we believe in a collaborative effort that combines medication management, family-based interventions and individual therapy.

Experienced psychiatrists work closely with psychologists, medical staff, even school administrators to give children and adolescents an integrated model of care.

What does this mean?

We start with a full psychiatric evaluation. We consider the biological, psychological and social factors that play a role in the difficulties our patients are experiencing. Then we build a comprehensive treatment plan suited to each patient that addresses those core factors.

We treat the spectrum of psychiatric conditions, including:

  • Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Trauma-related effects
  • Psychiatric presentations of medically ill patients
  • Anxiety
  • Mood
  • Thought and impulse control disorders

We also treat children with genetic, metabolic and other medical disorders with accompanying psychiatric symptoms.

Inpatient services

For children ages 12 and younger, we offer an 11-bed inpatient psychiatric unit with round-the-clock care. In addition to acute stabilization, the unit’s staff provides:

  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Treatment that includes medication management, family work, systems work and group therapy
  • Recommendations for ongoing treatment after discharge

Patient-centered and family-centered care is the priority of the inpatient unit. This means we focus on problem-solving techniques and non-coercive interventions, and minimize the use of seclusion and restraints.

The latest research
Our patients’ health comes first. That’s why our pharmacological and therapy interventions follow the most up-to-date, evidence-based interventions.

Staying connected
The Psychiatry Program provides consultation-liaison services to the other divisions at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. This service includes complete psychiatric evaluation and treatment recommendations, plus continued involvement in patient care while admitted to the hospital.
