What types of therapies does Phoenix Children’s provide on an outpatient basis? Any condition that limits a child’s abilities can be improved with the right therapy, which often resembles play but is carefully planned to achieve functional goals. We offer a variety of therapies to meet the unique needs of each child:

Physical Therapy (PT)

• Gait and mobility training
• Balance, agility and coordination training
• Gross motor skills and development
• Strength, endurance, range of motion and postural exercises
• Specialty programs are offered in neurorehabilitation, including serial casting, pelvic floor, infant development, technology, seating and mobility, chronic pain and gait lab
• All pediatric medically complex rehabilitation needs

Occupational Therapy (OT)

• Fine motor skills
• Skills for activities of daily living and self-care
• Visual motor and visual perception
• Sensory system function/management: perception, processing, integration and sensorimotor skills
• Splinting and adaptive equipment
• Sensory oral feeding
• Physical and mental health management: creating and maintaining healthy lifestyles as children transition into adolescence and adulthood
• Skills for school, work, leisure/play, home management and other valued activities/roles
• Specialty programs in areas of complex feeding, gender support, arm/hand rehabilitation, infant development, neurorehabilitation and many specific pediatric and rare conditions

Speech Therapy

• Receptive (comprehension) and expressive (articulation, voice, fluency) language skills
• Cognition, problem solving, reasoning, memory and reasoning skills
• Augmentative and alternative communication
• Aural habilitation
• Transgender voice therapy

Feeding Therapy (provided by a speech language pathologist)

• Feeding and swallowing skills
• Oral motor skills
• Thickener weaning
• Vital stimulation
• Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for swallowing (NMES)
• Modified barium swallow studies/videofluoroscopic swallow studies (MBS/VFSS)
• Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)

Newborn Early Screening Team (NEST) Clinic

Rehabilitation Services is a key component of Phoenix Children’s multidisciplinary NEST Clinic https://www.phoenixchildrens.org/nest. The goal of the NEST Clinic is to provide the extra support babies need after they "graduate" from neonatal intensive care, or if the pediatrician has concerns about the child meeting developmental milestones before the age of 3. This support includes continued monitoring and early intervention by our multidisciplinary team of developmental experts with advanced education and training in pediatric therapy.

• RT 300 – an integrated therapy system that use electrical stimulation for strengthening after a neurologic injury
• Andago System – for overground gait training, bridging the gap between treadmill-based and free walking
